One of the most talked about brand launch this year has to be Fenty Skin.
When celebrity-founder Rihanna first announced its launch on Instagram, the beauty world went berserk.
After all, her makeup line, Fenty Beauty, already has a huge fan base and has many well-loved products in its stable. Everyone is expecting big things to happen in Fenty Skin too.
All about Fenty Skin
Like Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin takes on an inclusive approach to its products. They've been tested on all skin types and tones and are suited for both men and women.
But what I probably didn't see coming was that the products are all multi-tasking – everything serves at least dual functions and is definitely inspired by Rihanna's time-starved lifestyle.
The brand first launched with three products: the Total Cleans'r Remove-It-All Cleanser works as both a makeup remover and daily cleanser, the Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum is a toner and serum at the same time, and the Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer doubles up as a sunscreen with SPF30.
After the initial launch in July, Fenty Skin announces the launch of the Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream, with Riri telling fans "Y'all thought I was gonna leave you without a night cream?!", completing everyone's daily routine.
Fenty Skin is also even more earth-conscious than Fenty Beauty. All products (except the moisturiser-sunscreen) comes without any paper boxes, and both moisturisers are refillable.
Fenty Skin review: What do I think about the products?
Fenty Skin Total Cleans'r Remove-It-All Cleanser review
This is a 2-in-1 makeup remover-cleanser that's formulated with Barbados Cherry (vitamin C), Gingko Biloba (oil control), Green Tea (antioxidants), Fig (antioxidants), and Ouince (conditioning).
It comes with an interesting packaging – all you need to do is twist the cap and squeeze. The cap can't be removed unlike conventional cleansers.
This packaging format definitely serves as a convenience – you no longer have to fumble with the cap that may drop or go missing, it's definitely a lot more elegant to twist and dispense.
However, after using it for a while, I realise that there's a slight problem with this. I usually place my cleanser at my sink rested on the cap. But now that the cap is also where the dispensing opening is, it just feel unhygienic to rest it on the cap. As such, I had to find ways to balance the cleanser the other way around instead.
As a cleanser, it performs really well. I love that it smells good (without much added fragrances) so it offers a sensorial experience – something that I really appreciate with cleansers.
I find that it doesn't strip the skin of its natural moisture and leaves it feeling soft and supple after each cleanse.
It performs decently as a makeup remover too. I was able to get most makeup off – with the exception of really stubborn liquid lipstick and waterproof mascara.
In conclusion, I would reach out for it as a daily cleanser, especially on days when I'm wearing light makeup. With heavy makeup, I'd skip this because I'd prefer a makeup remover that's more effective.
Fenty Skin Total Cleans'r Remove-It-All Cleanser will retail for S$38.
Fenty Skin Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum review
The product got its name from its unique thick texture and all you need to do is to pat onto your face – no cotton pad needed. This toner-serum is designed to help improve pores and dark spots, brightens skin, evens skin tone and texture, as well as fight shine.
Just like the cleanser, all you need to do is to twist the cap and squeeze the product out – very easy.
While the texture looks thick at first, I was glad to find that the product absorbs quickly. It feels slightly sticky at first, but quickly feels smooth without any sense of grease or stickiness. I like that it feels hydrating and comforting on the skin, and it doesn't hurt that it comes with a sweet scent that makes the application process more indulging.
The ingredients list also packs a punch. The product is formulated with Niacinamide (It-ingredient for anti-spots and brightening), Barbados Cherry (vitamin C), Australian Lemon Myrtle & Witch Hazel Water (oil control and refine pores), Japanese Raisin Tree (detoxification), Cactus Flower (hydration), and Green Tea & Fig (defend against environmental stressors).
I find that my skin looks brighter and feels more hydrated over the time I've used the product. While it didn't present drastic improvements to my skin, this is a great product I'll continue to reach out for for basic skin maintenance.
Fenty Skin Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum will retail for S$42.
Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen review
This moisturiser-sunscreen is refillable and similarly come with a unique packaging where you twist the bottle to reveal the nozzle, so you can pump and dispense the product. This makes it another elegant design that is also travel-friendly because it prevents spillage.
I also like the fact that it comes in a pump so it's a lot more hygienic than moisturisers in jars.
The product is very lightweight despite its multiple duties, and is not greasy nor sticky. The makeup-friendly product also sits well underneath my foundation, so you don't have to worry about it causing your makeup to pill.
Made with Kalahari Melon, which is known for its antixoxidants, vitamins, and hydration benefits, the moisturiser-sunscreen also smells fruity and refreshing – definitely something I love for a product that I use in the morning.
This is, hands-down, my favourite product in the entire Fenty Skin range so far because of how easy it is to slap on for an extra glow and a quick sunscreen reapplication.
Especially on days when I'm working from home, I find it easy to use this throughout the day to give my complexion a quick lift, while making sure I'm still getting sun protection.
Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen will retail for S$54 and its refill for S$46.
Fenty Skin review: Conclusion
The products are definitely going to be loved by those who prefer to have an easier routine that still covers all grounds. The products are well made and all come with amazing textures and scents so you'll really enjoy the application process.
Fenty Skin products will be available at Sephora in Singapore from 26 December. I wasn't able to get hold of the night cream right now, but I understand that it will also be available on 26 December, along with the rest of the products.
