From fruits to alcoholic beverages and everything in between, food-inspired products aren't anything new but the Japan-made Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack has been making waves thanks to special shout-outs by celebrities, including Chinese actress Fan Bingbing.
With the mask pack selling out in Japan (more than 12 million were sold worldwide, by the way!), it was also difficult to purchase the Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack online as many counterfeit products (see image below) started surfacing on the internet due to the soaring popularity of the mask pack.
And that's how Daily Vanity came across pdc, a reputable brand which sells quality and authentic Japanese beauty products that are the bestselling in Japan itself such as Wafood Made, Liftarna, Cutura, and Bocashu.
In Singapore, pdc has official e-stores on Lazada and Shopee, and also has presence in brick-and-mortar retailers such as Welcia-BHG, and Novela. pdc stocks select genuine Wafood Made products, including the Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack which we were excited to try after getting our hands on it (finally!).
Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack by pdc review: What it is
First things first, a little background on the pdc Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack. It is made of original sake lees extract, which is produced during the sake brewing process at the Kawazu Brewery in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture.
Japan has long been known for incorporating sake in various skincare products after discovering the baby-soft, wrinkle-free hands that toji, or sake master brewers, famously have well into old age. The reason? Making sake involves working with koji (cultivated mold used for rice fermentation), which is packed with enzymes and amino acids that help to moisturise and nourish skin.
Sake is such a big skin-loving ingredient in Japan that many locals would introduce the tradition into their lifestyle in the simplest way: by adding a cup or two of sake into bath water to keep their skin smooth and blemish-free.
As for the pdc Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack, it is made with a delicious cocktail of sake lees essence (a mixture of a special type of rice from Kyushu and natural spring water), rice ceramide as well as extracts of cucumber and orange seed to provide deep hydration and seal in moisture while brightening skin and refining pores.
Thanks to the rave reviews from celebrities as well as public users, pdc Wafood Made Sake Kasu pack has actually been ranked last year as Japan's #1 facial mask by @cosme, a comprehensive makeup and cosmetics portal in Japan that's trusted by almost all Japanese women.
Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack by pdc review: Does it really give you brighter, smoother skin?
Right off the bat, I was intrigued by the pdc Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack's unique packaging which resembled a drink pack that you can get from a 7-Eleven store in Japan – it was interesting and definitely made a nice addition to my vanity table.
When I opened up the Sake Kasu Pack, I immediately caught a whiff of the sake scent which I reckon will be something that sake lovers will really appreciate. It wasn't overpowering at all though, just a slight fermented scent that disappeared after a while.
The product's texture is thick and rather grainy, which is why the brand recommends using on clean, damp skin instead of totally dry skin – the slight dampness helps the Sake Kasu Pack to be spread onto your face more easily. Don't be fooled by its thick, grainy texture though, the formula is actually very soft and gentle when applied onto the skin.
I tried it twice a week and used it after cleansing my face. In the beginning, I had to practise control and patience to get the formula out of the packaging as I could risk squeezing out more than I need if I didn't. As you'll only need no more than a dollop the size of a 50-cent coin, it's important that you slowly squeeze out the product to get the desired amount because of the wide-mouth opening that could let out more product than what you need if you squeeze too hard.
Once applied, the mild sake scent lingered for a while and even smelled a little like beer at one point before going away completely.
I followed the instructions which recommended a 10-minute waiting time to let all the ingredients in the pack take effect before rinsing off thoroughly with warm water. Because of its thick pasty texture, some users found it difficult to wash off but that wasn't the case for me.
Instead of just washing off with water once my timer is up, I first wet my fingers a little and massaged the paste in circular motion on my skin to let the grainy bits exfoliate my face. I did this on my entire face for about a minute and personally found that I could wash off the Sake Kasu Pack pretty easily without any excessive rubbing needed when I take the time to dampen the paste on my face first.
After using the pdc Wafood Made Sake Kasu Pack for a week, I found that it helped to correct my uneven skin tone slightly and also brightened up my overall complexion. I like that it gave me skin-brightening effects without any dryness that usually comes with brightening products.
In fact, I found it to be quite hydrating as my skin didn't feel taut during and after using the Sake Kasu Pack. It even brightens up the fresh pimple scar just under my mouth without any aggravation – that just goes to show how gentle the formula is.
Overall, I find it to be an affordable multi-purpose skincare product that's good to have because you get to mask and exfoliate your face at the same time.
It does take an additional 10 minutes of my time to wait for the formula to work its magic on my skin, but I don't mind it at all because it allows me to take that time to catch a breather after a long day or to catch up on the latest news.
Thanks to its multi-purpose formula (I even let my husband try it with me!), I'm already planning to repurchase the mask pack when I'm done with my current pack.
